FLUXNET Office and Data Archive, Management, and Distribution Center
This FLUXNET Data Portal web site is focused on providing support to users of these datasets. It contains tools that assist scientists to acquire, query, browse, plot and manipulate diverse combinations of heterogeneous data from many sites, for many years and with various independent variables. These tools are the product of collaboration with database specialists at national laboratories (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA and Max Planck Institute of Biogeochemistry, Jena, Germany), Universities (Tuscia, Virginia, California-Berkeley) and industry (Microsoft). Early support for the FLUXNET network was provided by NASA (Oak Ridge National Laboratory Distributed Active Archive Center, ORNL DAAC, USA), US National Science Foundation (FLUXNET Office, UC Berkeley), Microsoft Research, US Department of Agriculture (Forest Service), and US Department of Energy.
In 2015, the US Department of Energy funded the network [FLUXNET Partnership Project (FPP)] and contracted University of California, Berkeley, under the leadership of Dennis Baldocchi, to extend and expand the functioning of the global FLUXNET database and website. To support this database, the team joined an international effort involving ICOS, AmeriFlux, and other region networks collaborators (i.e., Fluxdata Team), to build a next-generation, data-system that processes raw data and produces value-added data products in a standard manner. The data system also houses, distributes, and queries these data in order to support synthesis activities that improve our understanding on how climate, weather, ecological, physiological, and soil factors govern the exchange of carbon, water, and energy between vegetation and the atmosphere at multiple time and space scales.
Agencies Sponsor Flux Measurements
FLUXNET does not fund tower sites and regional networks directly, but partners with regional networks like AmeriFlux, ICOS, AsiaFlux, ChinaFlux, OzFlux to support network- and PI-supported flux towers. Funding for the numerous scientists, students, and technicians responsible for the day-to-day gathering of the flux data at individual field sites is provided by a variety of governmental and non-governmental organizations. In 2022, the National Science Foundation funded the network through the Accelerating Research through International Network-to-Network Collaborations (AccelNet) program. This grant will establish the formation of a FLUXNET Community Council to implement new community-building and data product efforts.
